At Net-Results we often say we love marketers that have “an engineering mind in a marketing career.”

The truth is that technology is an increasingly important part of marketing. I would also say that learning marketing is a lot easier than learning to be an engineer.

When selling our marketing automation platform, it’s common for us on the sales team to run into questions we don’t know the answer to. Fortunately, one of our sales engineers is most likely exactly what you’re referring to: he’s an engineer, but he knows what marketers need and he can speak to them, in their own language.

I think that’s the key here: try to listen to customers, understand their problems. And then speak to those problems using the wealth of knowledge that you have. Don’t get too technical (unless you audience is equally savvy) and just paint them a picture of how the app will impact their lives.

In the end, it’s all communication. 🙂
